While it may seem like a good solution to an overgrown tree in the short-term, this often causes much bigger problems in the long term.

What is Tree Topping and Should it be Used in Residential Tree Trimming?

Tree topping refers to the process of removing the top part of a tree in an effort to reduce the size of the tree as opposed to tree trimming which involves reducing the size of a tree through precise cuts to ensure tree health.

This takes out a great deal of the tree’s canopy and leaves the tree with a large number of stumps sticking out in all directions. Topping is not only damaging to the tree, but it is actually against city tree ordinances in Colorado Springs because it creates a hazard.

When a tree is topped, it is left with more open wounds than what the tree can easily heal.

The City of Colorado Springs announced in 2020 a new goal to plant 18,071 new trees within the next two years (2021-2022). This project was done in celebration of the city’s 150 ^th anniversary.

The Colorado Springs History of Tree Planting

Colorado Springs was first officially established on July 31 ^st , 1871 by General William Jackson Palmer. At that time, the Colorado Springs region was all plains and there were very few trees. General Palmer wanted to plan a city with an aesthetic environment. 10,000 trees were brought in and planted around the city to accomplish this goal.

The Colorado Springs 150 Tree Project

July 2021 will be Colorado Springs 150 ^th anniversary. The city has decided to celebrate this milestone by honoring General Palmer’s dedication to beautifying the city by planting trees. The goal is to plant 18,071 new trees by 2022. Everyone in the city is invited to participate by planting new trees around their own homes. All you need to do is plant a new tree in your yard and register it with the city. Just submit your name, the property type that you are planting on, and the number of trees that you have planted.

What Are The Best Trees To Plant In Colorado Springs?

What is the most massive living organism on planet earth? The answer is actually not a blue whale. Or the great barrier reef.

The Humongous Fungus in Malheur National Forest in Oregon takes the record for the largest organism by an expanse of acreage, but there is still one more organism that is even larger by mass.

The answer is the Pando Aspen Grove located on the Colorado Plateau in Southern Utah. The Pando Aspen Grove is the world’s most massive living organism and is estimated to be around 80,000 years old.

Aspen Groves as One Huge Organism joined at the Roots

Aspens are a fascinating tree. Aspen trees do not stand alone with their own root and a vascular system like most other plants do. Aspen groves are one enormous organism connected by a single root system. Aspens do not grow from seeds. They grow by sprouting new trees from their roots. These are called root suckers. Each aspen in a shared root system is genetically identical.

It is easy to spot which aspens are connected when the leaves change color in the fall. Each of the trees in a connected grove will all start to change the color of their leaves from green to yellow simultaneously.

The Lifespan of an Aspen Tree

Aspen trees can grow in elevations from 6500 to 11,500 feet, but they do best naturally at altitudes above 8000 feet. Aspen trees are more vulnerable to warm drought. They can thrive for a while at a lower elevation, but they typically do not live as long in the warmer climates as they do in the cooler mountain temperatures.

At a higher elevation, the individual trees often live to be around 150 years old, however, the grove as a whole can live to be thousands of years old as the root suckers are replenished. In the city of Colorado Springs, the lifespan of an individual aspen tree averages closer to 20 to 40 years due to the warmer climate, but small groves can live much longer.

Growing Aspen Trees in the City

The needles on my evergreen tree are turning brown and dropping, is my tree dying?

The tree’s needles are indeed a health indicator for the tree, but browning needles is not necessarily a sign that the tree is dying. It depends on how much of the tree is turning brown and where. These are some tips for assessing your tree.

Are the needles on the inner part of the Evergreen Tree turning brown?

While Evergreen trees do not lose all of their leaves in the fall like their deciduous counterparts, they do have their own process for shedding their oldest needles to make room for new growth. Evergreen trees drop the innermost needles on the part of the branches that are closest to the trunk, usually in the fall.

Trees grow from the trunk outward. The branches closest to the tree are the oldest part of the tree, and the branches on the outer canopy are the youngest part of the tree.

Branches need to be trimmed just beyond the protective branch collar (this is the more swollen area right at the base of a branch) so that the tree can heal properly.

There are several different levels of tree trimming services that can be done depending on the needs of your tree and property.

Class 1 Trim: Cleaning

A Class 1 Trim targets the removal of dead or diseased wood.

Dead limbs become very brittle and are far more likely to snap and break in a storm and fall on whatever is below them. When a part of a tree is sick, the tree also sends a higher percentage of its resources (water, nutrients, energy) to the struggling limbs.

This results in less resources circulating throughout the rest of the tree, which weakens the overall structure of the tree.

When the dead or unhealthy tree branches are cut out, the tree is more able to circulate its resources and its overall structure is strengthened. There is a decreased chance of insects and disease taking up residence in the decaying wood and a reduced risk of branches breaking and falling in a storm.

A Class 1 Trim should be done anytime there is dead wood in a tree to prevent the hazard of limbs breaking or falling. This is particularly important if limbs are close to homes, vehicles or other structures.

Class 2 Trim: Thinning

The main purpose of a Class 2 Trim is to direct the growth of the tree.

The dead or diseased wood is removed, and limbs and branches are also thinned out to promote strength and growth in the tree.

This should be done anytime a tree becomes overgrown and thick with competing branches (when the branches start growing into each other and competing for space), or when there is an increasing amount of dead wood.

There is an important balance to this type of trim. The tree needs to be thinned out enough to space out the branches to allow for air circulation and sunlight and to encourage a more efficient flow of water and nutrients, but the tree also should not be over trimmed.

The general rule of thumb is that no more than 25% of the limbs should be removed, and this should include the competing branches, but not the outer canopy.

A Class 2 Trim is typically done about every 3 to 5 years but the need for this may vary widely depending on the type of tree and the tree’s environment. This can be done at any time of year.

Class 3 Trim: Fruit Trees

Fruit trees require a little bit more care and maintenance than most other types of trees.

Fruit trees are more prone to breakage due to fruit load. Growth needs to be directed so that the branches are spaced out well and not competing for space so that the fruit load is balanced to prevent limbs breaking. Young fruit trees need to be trained early so that the fruit-bearing limbs grow out evenly.

Proper pruning of fruit trees early in the season encourages new growth which stimulates flower and fruit production through the summer and fall.

A Class 3 Trim is mainly used for pruning fruit trees. In this type of trim, every part of the tree is pruned, including the outer canopy. This encourages increased growth and fruit production and helps strengthen the tree’s branches for fruit-bearing.

The best time to prune a fruit tree is during the winter or in the early spring before the buds open up.

Trees expend a lot of energy during the growth process, and fruit trees respond better to being pruned in the wintertime. Pruning a fruit tree in the winter will strengthen the tree and prepare it to send its resources out to encourage growth and blossoming in the spring, and increased fruit production in the fall.

Young trees need to be pruned and trained regularly but the frequency of pruning is needed less frequently for more mature trees. A full-grown fruit tree typically needs to be pruned about every 3 years.

Raising a Tree

It is often beneficial to have space under the tree branches to be able to walk under or work around it.

Raising a tree is a tree trimming technique that involves removing the lowest branches of the tree to make space underneath the tree. It is helpful to the health of a yard to be able to get underneath a tree to clean debris that gets caught around it, and there is often benefit to mulching around a tree to hold in moisture.

Raising the limbs of a tree also simply adds space for activity in the yard.

As a tree grows and fills out there may be specific branches that are growing in an unwanted direction or growing into something they shouldn’t. Colorado Bark Beetle – Why do they kill trees and what can be done to prevent it?

When you drive up to Summit, Grand, and Park counties in the Colorado mountains, there are entire forests of evergreen trees that have died out. The acreage of the dead forests may sometimes even rival that of a forest fire. The trees remain standing, but the needles are rust-colored and starting to drop. This forest damage is the work of one very small culprit – the bark beetle.

Bark beetles make their homes in evergreen trees; primarily ponderosa pines, lodgepole pines, and spruce trees. Mountain Pine Beetle and Spruce Beetle are two species of bark beetle that are more common in higher altitude areas such as Woodland Park, Cascade, and sometimes Monument and Black Forest. The Ips Beetle is the most common species of bark beetle found in the city of Colorado Springs.

Once beetles have infested a tree there is no saving that tree, and tree removal will be necessary down the road.

The most important thing that can be done is to prevent it from spreading on to other trees. Beetle kill trees need to be removed and the logs and slash need to be chipped to eliminate the beetle. Spraying neighboring trees with an insecticide may also help to prevent the beetle from spreading.

Why do beetles cause so much harm to trees?

The beetles dig tunnels that damage the tree’s vascular system. The beetle colony lifecycle begins when adult beetles fly to find a new tree to lay eggs in. Once beetles take up residence in a tree they start digging out tunnels called egg galleries.

They lay eggs in these tunnels, and when the larva hatch they start digging their own smaller tunnels all over the tree. All of this tunneling clogs up the vascular system of the tree which prevents it from distributing water and resources throughout its trunk and limbs.

The tree starts to die back. Without a properly functioning vascular system, the tree will start to dry out and die back, starting from the canopy inward toward the trunk. The needles start to turn yellow or rust-colored and drop and woodpeckers start digging into the bark looking for the beetle.

Beetles prefer to infest trees that are already in decline due to drought or stress. A tree that has been infested by beetle will die off eventually, though it may not be completely dead until after the beetles have already flown to the next tree.

A forest under attack. Each new generation of adult beetle flies to new host trees to start new colonies.

Beetles can take down entire forests of trees by colonizing from tree to tree. Once a tree is infested with the beetle, it needs to be removed before the beetle can fly to neighboring trees, and the rest of the trees in the area need to be sprayed with an insecticide to keep the beetle out.

Signs of Bark Beetle

Boring dust. There may be yellow or red-brown dust in the crevices of the tree bark. When the beetles enter the tree the start to dig, and the dust is what is being kicked out by the beetle as they tunnel.

Lines in the wood underneath the bark. After the beetles enter the tree, they start to form tunnels called egg galleries. When the eggs hatch, the larva start digging smaller tunnels throughout the tree. When the bark of the tree is peeled back these tunnels can be seen in the form of squiggly lines running up and down the otherwise smooth wood of the tree.

Woodpeckers. Bark beetle is a great snack for the woodpecker. When the beetle is present in a tree, woodpeckers will often follow and will leave nickel to quarter-sized jagged holes in the bark and may even peel back sections of bark in their effort to get to the beetle. This will usually be seen in the lower sections of the tree.

Pitch streamers and pitch tubes . When the tree becomes infested with beetle it starts to ooze sap as a defense mechanism. Bubblegum sized balls of sap called pitch tubes may be visible in the bark at the base of the tree. Streamers of resin that look like candle wax may be visible going down the tree. These are a result of the tree trying to force the beetle out. This is more common with the Mountain Pine Beetle and Spruce Beetle which reside at higher altitudes.

The tree’s needles start to drop. After the beetle has started to colonize the trees vascular system will clog up and it will start to die back. The tree needles will turn rust-colored and start to drop and accumulate under the tree.

Exit holes in the bark. When the beetle larva becomes full-grown, they exit through the bark to find a new host tree. When they fly, they leave holes in the trunk the size of a pencil eraser. Once there is evidence that the beetles may have flown it is important to also check neighboring trees for signs of the beetle.

Preventative measures

Keep trees healthy. Weakened trees are much more susceptible to the Bark Beetle. Beetle kill increases greatly in times of drought when tree wood starts to dry out as this makes for a more preferable habitat for the beetle. Bark Beetles attack healthy trees far less frequently, so the first step to preventing beetle kill is to keep your trees healthy. Watering, trimming, and deep root feeding are examples of things that can be done to keep your trees healthy.

Remove the trees that have already been infested . Contact a tree service company as soon as possible if a tree starts showing signs of the beetle. Once the beetle has taken up residence in the tree it is too late to save that tree, and it is important to remove it to protect the other trees in the area before the beetle matures and flies to new tree hosts. The beetles tend to fly in the late spring, so it is best to have the tree removed prior to that.

Remove all infested wood. Once the tree has been removed, the logs and slash need to be removed from the property right away. The beetle will continue to thrive in, and will eventually fly from the logs and slash even after the tree has been cut down. A tree service company will use a wood chipper to chip up the infested wood which will also kill any remaining beetle so that they cannot fly on to other trees.

Tree spraying to protect the rest of the trees in the area. If beetles have taken up residence in the area it helps to take measures to protect the rest of your trees. Tree spraying for beetle is a great preventative measure that can be done by a tree service company.

This needs to be done before the tree has become infested. The timing of when to spray a tree depends on the species of beetle. Spraying for the Ips Beetle, for example, should be done twice, once in the early spring and again in the summer. The Spruce Beetle and Mountain Pine Beetle only need to be sprayed for once.

A tree spraying professional will spray a high concentration insecticide on the lower trunk of the tree. The insecticide is formulated to kill beetles when they try to get into the tree to lay eggs.
